Participants’ final project will be a blazer or coat which is constructed using techniques presented in class and may include some or all of the following:  bound buttonholes, welt pockets, notched or shawl collar, vented sleeves, and hand-inserted linings.

Class Preparation: This is a construction class. Please note that participants can choose to register for 1 week or 2 weeks of muslin fittings prior to the first tailoring class, which is scheduled for 9/11. Final muslin fittings / tweaks will be made during Class 1 on 9/11.

Muslin fittings will be available on 8/29 and 9/04. This will prepare those who would benefit from fitting assistance for this class before the tailoring portion of class begins.

Participants should be prepared with a fitted muslin,  by class on 9/11

Registration Options:

  • Muslin Fitting 8/29, Providence ($35)

  • Muslin Fitting 9/04, Cranston ($35)

  • Tailoring classes 9/11 - 11/20 ($315)

Additional Information:

Patterns: Look for the following features in your pattern: a lined jacket or coat with a notched or shawl collar, and a two-piece set-in sleeve for the purpose of a sleeve vent. Jane will be covering many techniques that you will be free to choose to use. Your chosen pattern should include a lining.

Patterns should be approved within 2 weeks of the first class, allowing for time to make a muslin.  Email Jane at janeiheadley@gmail.com

Pattern Preparation: Please back your coat or jacket paper pattern pieces with a lightweight fusible interfacing to make it easier to handle.  Do not cut along seam lines before fusing to allow for pattern adjustments.  When you construct your fitting muslin, make up the jacket with the fronts, backs, sleeves and under collar only.  No facings, pockets, etc.  Please mark the center lines, roll lines on the collar and lapels, button and buttonhole placements and hemlines.  After adjustments are made you will cut one inch seam allowances to allow for fitting.

Choosing Fabrics: When choosing  your fabric, remember a firmly woven mid weight woolen flannel, tweed or very small check will be the easiest fabrics to tailor.  If you choose a plaid be prepared to take extra time to match and also buy / have more fabric on hand. Also keep in mind a darker colored fabric will not show the wear and tear of hand tailoring as much as a lighter colored fabric.  Please purchase ¼ yd more of your fashion fabric than the pattern requires. This will be used for your practice buttonholes and welt pockets. You will also need ¼ yd. of 100% silk organza to match your wool, which will be used for buttonholes.

A selection of lining fabrics is available at local fabric stores.  Make sure your lining fabric is opaque so that sewing construction details do not show through.  Linings are also available online.  Rayon is a good choice as well as silk in a suitable weight.  Polyester does not hold a good crease.

Interfacings and underlinings do not need to be purchased before methods are discussed during the first class.  i

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me by email- janeiheadley@gmail.com or text or call 401-524-4099.

It is important to us that you have an enjoyable and successful experience.  It requires that a significant amount of time is spent on homework, as much of class time is spent on learning / review of tailoring methods.

Reference books - no need to purchase. Methods from both of these sources will be included in class instruction.

  • Couture Tailoring: Claire Shaefer’s book on Tailoring is amazing and I think that it is an excellent resource.  It can be purchased on Amazon for $73.00.  This is by no means a requirement. Link to book.

  • Japanese Tailoring Manual by Judy Barlup. Publication Date: April 2021. Link to book.
